Unlocking Success: A Guide to Keeping Your New Year's Resolutions

Dec 28, 2023

I can't help but get all the feels during this time of year. Reviewing the year as a whole provides so much joy as I think about what I have accomplished in 2023 and all the adventures I have had with my family. If you are like me, as the new year approaches, I enjoy the process of setting new goals and intentions for the next year. So often we can set lofty goals for ourselves, start out too strong in January then feel overwhelmed and defeated come February when we aren't seeing progress, let our intentions slip, or feel like we have bitten off more than we can chew. Whether you were hoping to start exercising more, eat healthier, or commit to focusing on your overall health, the key to success lies in not just making resolutions, but in keeping them. Here I have listed a few practical strategies to help you stay committed to your goals throughout the year.

  1. Set Realistic Goals:

One of the main reasons resolutions fail is because they're too ambitious or too vague. Instead of aiming for massive changes, break your larger goal into smaller, manageable steps. This makes the path to success more achievable and less overwhelming. For instance, if your resolution is to eat more balanced meals, start with a specific number of days a week you'll plan to cook a healthy meal at home or aim to set time away each Sunday to meal plan.

  1. Be Specific and Clear:

Define your resolutions with clarity. Instead of a generic goal like "exercise more," specify how often, for how long, and what type of exercise you'll engage in. When your objectives are clear, it's easier to track progress and stay focused on the path to success.

  1. Create a Plan:

Once you've established clear goals, devise a plan of action. Break down your resolution into monthly, weekly, and daily tasks. This not only helps in managing your time effectively but also provides a roadmap, making your journey towards achieving the resolution more structured and attainable.

  1. Track Your Progress:

Regularly monitor your progress to stay motivated. Keep a journal, use apps, or create a visual log of your achievements. Celebrate small victories along the way, as these milestones will reinforce your commitment and boost your confidence.

  1. Stay Accountable:

Share your resolutions with friends, family, or your healthcare provider. Having a support system can provide encouragement and hold you accountable. Think of someone who will be a positive influence on your progress and can help remind you of why you started this goal in the first place.

  1. Learn from Setbacks:

Setbacks are a natural part of any journey, and resolutions are no exception. Rather than seeing them as failures, view setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. Review what went wrong, make adjustments, and renew your commitment to the your goal.

  1. Cultivate Patience:

Realize that change takes time. Be patient with yourself, and don't be discouraged by slow progress. I am a firm believer in progress over perfection. Focus on the positive changes you're making, and stay committed to the long-term vision.

  1. Reassess and Adjust:

As the year unfolds, your circumstances and priorities may change. Periodically reassess your resolutions and adjust them to align with your current situation and aspirations. Flexibility ensures that your goals remain relevant and achievable throughout the year.

Keeping New Year's resolutions requires intention, planning, and a positive mindset. By setting realistic goals, being mindful in your daily actions, and periodically reassessing your objectives, you can turn your resolutions into lasting habits. Remember, success is a journey, not a destination, and every step forward is a victory worth celebrating. Cheers to you and a healthy year ahead!
